Women in the NRA

From the beginning of the post-Newtown focus on gun control, NRA have put women front and center in their fight against new restrictions. "This is the National Rifle Association catering to demand," NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said. "We've seen in the last few years an increase in women buying guns, joining the National Rifle Association, enrolling in personal safety classes and going out and organizing women's-only hunts." The numbers suggest that over 65% of women are for stricter gun control policies, a stark difference from the 44% of men who agree with the new ideas. Clearly, the NRA needs to reengage a generation of women who no longer were raised with gun.
“Armed and Fabulous,” NRA’s new outcry to reach the women of American has been the inspiration for the emerging gun fascination among women. The campaign runs under the premise that owning a gun can become a fashion statement, enabling women to embrace a lifestyle that keeps them safe while looking the very best they can. In their recent Houston convention, the NRA unveiled pink rifles and hand guns, “Concealed Carrie” purses with handgun pockets, and “Flashbang” holsters that readily attach to the front of a bra. Women no longer have to wear bulky and gritty clothing that their husbands, rather the new collection as Taylor Johnston, a Flashbang Holsters sales representative described it "We want them to look feminine, look good, and still feel safe.
The campaign has inspired the launching of NRAWOMEN.TV, a website designed to popularize a new empowering lifestyle for women. The “new energy” initiative fights the stigma that women should be characterized by “gun owner.” Rather it is an attempt individualize women and tell their inspiring stories of protecting themselves from abusive husbands or talk about the new perspectives a gun provides. The website, also, has readily accessible forums with standardized letters that can be sent to elected officials describing the safety that guns bring. Overall, the website, very chic and user friendly, engages women in a manner that glorifies a new lifestyle for a woman to take.
